Plovdiv and Bachkovo Monastery Day Trip from Sofia

Visit the history-steeped Plovdiv Old Town and Bachkovo Monastery on this day trip from Sofia, led by an expert guide. Travel by comfortable minivan to the charming city of Plovdiv. Wander amid historical monuments, art galleries, bohemian cafes and stunning 19th-century architecture during a guided tour of the Old Town. Then, after visiting the Roman amphitheater and enjoying free time to sightsee independently, continue to the Bachkovo Monastery. Explore the holy site with your guide and admire the magnificent frescoes that depict Judgment Day. Entrance fees not included.

Start your day at the meeting point in central Sofia and then hop inside an air-conditioned minivan and travel out of the Bulgarian capital to the city of Plovdiv, one of the oldest towns in the country and Bulgaria’s second largest city. As you travel, listen to your expert guide’s insightful commentary about the 7,000-year-old settlement and the day ahead.
On arrival, after roughly two hours on the road, climb out of your vehicle and set off on foot to discover the charming Old Town. Typified by its beautifully resorted mid-19th-century houses, art galleries, bohemian cafes and historical monuments, the Old Town is home to many of Plovdiv’s most celebrated artists. With your guide leading the way, get up close to the Thracian, Roman, Byzantine and Bulgarian antiquities, and visit the 2nd-century Roman amphitheater, which is still used for live performances today.
After your roughly 2-hour walking tour, enjoy free time for lunch (own expense) before returning to your minivan and carrying on to Bachkovo Monastery. Nestled in the Rhodopi Mountains, the monastery dates back to the 11th century. Tour the site with your guide and, as you marvel at the intricate frescoes depicting Judgment Day and Neoplatonism, listen to your guide share fascinating facts and details about its history and architecture.
When the time comes, begin the journey back to Sofia. Your day trip then concludes with a drop-off at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in the city center.
