Traditional Female Basket Weaving Workshop Including a visit to the Tyrendarra Indigenous Protected Area
This 3-hour workshop introduces you to the traditional basket weaving methods used by the Gunditjmara women to weave eel baskets. Learn how to identify native 'Poonyart' grass and weave your very own basket under the supervision of Gunditjmara woman Jody Agnew.
When you enter the Budj Bim Orientation Centre, help yourself to a hot drink and something to eat while you wait for the other guests to arrive. You will be provided with snacks and refreshments throughout the workshop.
After this, you will take a short bus journey (weather dependent) to the Tyrendarra Indigenous Protected Area where you will learn how to identify and collect the native grasses used to create eel baskets. The next step is to learn how to make your own basket following the instructions of Gunditjmara woman ody Agnew.
Learn the intricate methods that are still used today. You are welcome to take photographs and take your basket home with you to continue.
Please note: this is a female only workshop
