Small Group Derwent River Valley and Coal River Valley Day Trip from Hobart
This excursion follows the River Derwent to the rainforest where one can experience the magnificence of the majestic Russell Falls on a day trip from Hobart. Walk through one of the wildlife parks and then wander around the historic village of Richmond. This small group tour, limited to 14 passengers, allows for a more customized experience with your expert guide.
From Hobart, the group will take a leisurely drive up the Derwent River Valley, through the historic village of New Norfolk, to Mt. Field National Park, and Russell Falls, visiting the Salmon Ponds (optional) along the way.
After some nourishment at the restaurant at Mt Field, the excursion will continue down the other side of the Derwent River to Brighton, where one can spend an hour viewing the Tasmanian native animals at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Hand feeding of Kangaroos and touching a Koala are definitely part of this experience. Alternatively, some of the group may prefer to visit Zoodoo Wildlife Park, an exciting hands-on wildlife park with a large range of native, agricultural and exotic animals, including rare white African lions.
From the Wildlife Parks the group will continue to Richmond Historic Village, where an hour can easily be spent wandering the village and visiting the original convict goal (small entry fee), the oldest convict constructed bridge in Australia, as well as the oldest Catholic Church and the oldest Anglican Church in Australia, and a model of Hobart circa 1820 (small entry fee), before returning to Hobart. The Richmond Bakery is a must for light refreshments. Curried scallop pies are a speciality.
