Make your own way to Penfolds Barossa Valley Cellar Door for your morning or afternoon winemaking session. As you start your 1-hour experience in the Winemaker's
Laboratory, hear from your expert instructor about Penfolds' beginnings in 1844 at the Magill Estate in the Adelaide Hills. The winery then opened the
Barossa Valley location in 1911 and greatly expanded its production
here in the 1970s as the number of vineyards increased in the Barossa Valley region.
After receiving an overview, delve into the details of winemaking. Learn the features of different wines and how to go about developing a blend that shines.
Using the provided grenache, shiraz and mourvedre varieties — the same ones that make up Penfolds' renowned Bin 138 wine — apply the art and science of winemaking into the creation of your blend. Your instructor answers any questions that you may have and assists you throughout the blending process.
Once you have mastered your recipe, your wine is bottled and presented to you to take home.
At the end of your 1-hour winemaking class, you may want to see more of the estate on your own. You can sample premium wines in the tasting room or stroll around the grounds before continuing on to your next destination.
